Programs Funded by the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation

1999-2001
The Houston Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation funded the Mind, Body, & Spirit Self-Empowerment Program for Breast Cancer Survivors. This was a collaboration between University of Texas, School of Nursing, Galveston, Texas, Warren Cancer Research Foundation, and Saint David’s Hospital in Austin, TX. Principal Investigator of the project was Carolyn Kinney, Ph.D., R.N, UTMB-Galveston; and Principal Co-Investigators: James Lockhart, M.D, Tony Madeira, M.D., Denise Rodgers, M.Div., in Tulsa.

The project’s primary objective was to introduce breast cancer survivors to innovative strategies for becoming active and informed participants in creating a balance between mind, body and spirit through the Mind, Body, Spirit Program (MBSP). A secondary objective was to train group facilitators at UTMB to provide similar groups in the future, thus expanding the long-term impact of the current project.

The program is 12 weeks in duration and students attend a three-hour session once per week. Survivors learn about the power of their mind, visualization and healing techniques, dream interpretation, and guided imagery.

Summary of Results

Seven groups were conducted serving a total of 51 breast cancer survivors*. The groups were held at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX, St. David’s Hospital in Austin, and Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa, in collaboration with the Warren Cancer Research Foundation. Groups were conducted by MBSP trained facilitators. All participants were female with the age range of 38 to 78 years and a mean age of 55 (n=51).
Success of the MBSP was evaluated both qualitatively and quantitatively. Health histories were administered at the beginning of the program and a qualitative questionnaire was administered at the beginning and upon completion. In addition, a series of well-validated instruments were used to document changes in participant perceptions and behavior. Results from all quantitative instruments indicate that program participants showed statistically and clinically significant improvement on all measures. The instruments and results are:

  1. Beck Depression Inventory: Participants’ scores decreased significantly (p = .001, r2 = .34, large effect size).

  2. FACT-B-Quality of Life Assessment for Breast Cancer Survivors: Participants’ scores increased significantly (p< .001, r2 = .05, small to medium effect size).

  3. FACIT-SP--Spirituality Well-Being Measure for Chronic Illness: Participants’ scores increased significantly (p< .001, r2 = .30, large effect size).

  4. Perceived Well-Being Scale (evaluating physical, spiritual, intellectual, psychological, social, and emotional dimensions): Participants’ scores increased significantly (p< .002, r2 = .16, large effect size).

Results published in Journal of Holistic Nursing, Sept. 2003, go to Publications.

2002-2003
The Houston Affiliate of Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation once again provided funding for the purposes of bringing the Mind, Body, Spirit Self-Empowerment Program to a free-standing breast center in Houston, called The Rose. The Rose is a clinic for the underserved. Approximately 65 women participated in the program, and five facilitators were trained. In addition, the program was translated to Spanish and taught to 18 Latino Breast Cancer Survivors.

2005-2006
The Austin affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation has provided funding to supply breast cancer survivors residing in Bastrop County with mastectomy products and wigs/styling for women during and following treatment of breast cancer.
